What is the most adventurous thing of your life? Could it be traveling to exotic places? Perhaps a daring relationship you have loved living. Maybe the most adventurous thing of life has been a storm, a season filled with courage and surprise, or maybe it is reading a fantastic book. There is one most exciting adventure beckoning to us all.
Faith is an adventure for a life time. There are cliffhanger moments when we are not sure what to expect from God. Greatest heights of joy and some of the darkest valleys are experienced when we mourn our losses on an adventure of faith. Companions sojourn with us from time to time as mentors, guides, contemplatives, and spiritual friendship through our journey. Each event, each moment, each person that crosses our life path has potential to influence our faith adventure.
The Scripture
The “Great Hall of Faith” depicted in Hebrews 11 is a profound witness to God’s love and presence within humanity. This Scripture text is also a testimony to human obedience and faithful trust of God. The words from Hebrews call believers to faithful endurance. It is poetic, panoramic in historical stories, always relevant and challenges us to live our steadfast love of God out loud.
As we hear the stories of Abel, Enoch, Noah, and Abraham, our hearts are captivated by the vital connect between interior attitudes and external action. Abraham did not go to the new land to own it for material wealth. He went to live in obedience to God. He heard God. He heeded God’s Word, believed God’s Word, and took action. His abiding trust of God enabled him, an imperfect human being to move beyond the normal boundaries of possibility. God worked miracles in Abraham’s life as he lived his adventure of faith.
Today’s Prayer Practice
MapQuest driving directions are nothing compared to the guidance of the Holy Spirit on our Life Faith Adventure. Today you are invited to be as creative as your heart desires with colored pencils, pens, paper, computer graphics, or whatever you use to create your Life Faith Adventure map. This is more than a straight timeline from birth until present. A Life Faith Adventure map has twists, turns, uphill, downhill, closed roads, swampy marshes, flowing streams, bogs and freeways. All of these symbols match our adventure of faith in relationship with God and others.
Today ask God to assist you in remembering your faith adventure through life. Who were the people whose path has crossed yours? What events spurred you on in faith or bogged you down? How has God been profoundly heard, experienced, and heeded through your action?
When you have finished creating your Life Faith Adventure map, offer it to God in praise and thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness. Celebrate your faithful living as God loves on you.
Enjoy Praying.
