Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water…”
– John 4:13–15
What a scene! Imagine sitting beside the ocean, gazing at the immense expanse of water while seeking communion with the Divine. Can you hear the lively wild water and the rhythmic sounds of the ocean’s waves?
Why three chairs? Three chairs provide one chair for speaker (client or directee, listener (spiritual director) and God. We are saving a chair for you!
This Trinitarian conversation opens the way for each person to listen to God’s whispering voice. As each person listens to the other and both persons listen for the quickening of God’s gentle nudges, the spiritual direction session unfolds and God’s creative, sustaining, life-giving energy is revealed.
“The spiritual life does not remove us from the world but leads us deeper into it.”

Spiritual Direction and Supervision
Historically, those seeking a closer relationship with God often went into the desert to find teachers, mentors, and spiritual guides. During the time of John Wesley, believers desiring a deeper relationship with God attended small spiritual formation groups in which the question, “How is it with your soul?” Today people within and beyond the church are thirsty for more than currently experienced in life and seek out faith companions and spiritual directors.
Spiritual Direction involves intentional listening for the interior movement and quiet whispers of God. Conversations can be one-on-one or in a group with the active listening technique of Three-Way-Listening. Each participant is listening to the other person and all are listening to God. Generally, Spiritual Direction involves an ongoing, monthly relationship which provides clarity of heart and encourages deep contemplative listening. Spiritual Direction is neither counseling nor therapy. It is also possible to meet weekly or bi-monthly if the client chooses to pray through St. Ignatius’ 19th Annotation, Journey with Jesus.
Spiritual Direction is for you! With an ever-deepening awareness of God and articulation of God’s presence in the world (within community and individual life), you become even more empowered as God’s peacemaker. As you become a non-anxious presence in relationship with others, self and God – God is worshipped and lives are transformed. Living Streams Flowing Water offers individual and group spiritual direction online via free conference calling, virtually “face to face” with Zoom or on-site in Columbus, Ohio and at retreat locations.
